PunchClock, An Office In/Out Tracker That Uses Apple's iBeacons

By Rollin Bishop on Jul 09, 2014 01:43 pm

PunchClock

PunchClock is an office in/out tracker by Mac and iOS software developer Panic that uses Apple’s iBeacons and iOS 8 to keep tabs on when people are in the office. Panic also added the ability to send push notifications to anyone marked “in” via PunchClock. Though the tracker is not a retail product, Panic has made PunchClock available on GitHub.

With this new technology in-hand, it wasn't too long before I put together a brand new office In/Out tracker called PunchClock. It uses a combination of a geo-fence and iBeacon tracking, plus a simple Sinatra backend hosted at Heroku. The part that took the longest to fine-tune was figuring out the right combination of polling to provide good location information without draining the battery.

The Vault, A Self-Serve Coffee Shop in North Dakota That Operates on the Honor System

By Brian Heater on Jul 09, 2014 11:43 am

Watch the Video

The Vault is a self-serve coffee shop located in a former bank building in Valley City, North Dakota where customers pay on the honor system. When customers are finished serving themselves, there's a credit card reader and a slot for checks and cash. There are some security measures on-hand, but the shop's owners mostly rely on the honesty of Valley City's community to police themselves.

Many people ask how we are not being robbed blind. A lessor factor is that we have cameras – though their primary purpose is to help provide a safe atmosphere. More important is the good will of the people of Valley City. Generally speaking the people of Valley City are more generous than dishonest. In the first seven months of being open we averaged 15% more than our asking prices.

In a report on the coffee shop by Aaron Boerner for local news station KVRR, co-founder David Brekke insists that he didn’t realize self-service was a novel concept in the world of coffee shops.

At the time, I didn’t realize how unique that was. I thought it just made sense and I found out later by Googling that there just isn’t anything like it.

A Time-Lapse Video of the Port of Long Beach, The Second Busiest Container Shipping Port in the United States

By Brian Heater on Jul 09, 2014 10:42 am

Watch the Video

"The Art of Stevedore" is a video by filmmaker Alex Hallajan featuring time-lapse footage of the Port of Long Beach, a Southern California container shipping port that ranks as the second busiest in the United States — after the Port of Los Angeles. The video follows the containers as they move from trucks to ships, in a process most likely take for granted.

The process hasn’t changed in hundreds of years except today we do it with stunning efficiency while maintaining safety and environmental cleanliness.

The word "stevedore," which gives the video its name, is a term used to refer to dock workers and is believed to have originated in either Portugal or Spain.

'The Flash' Reimagined as a Film by Legendary Swedish Director Ingmar Bergman

By Brian Heater on Jul 09, 2014 10:19 am

Watch the Video

In honor of the upcoming CW television series The Flash, New York City-based filmmaker Patrick Willems has reimagined the speedy DC Comics superhero through the lens of legendary Swedish director Ingmar Bergman. The short is a black-and-white peek into the existential crises involved in being the costumed hero.

For a movie about the fastest man alive, the obvious choice to direct would be the filmmaker behind such classics as The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries and Scenes From a Marriage?

Willems also recently created a Tommy Wiseau-style Batman short and The Punisher as directed by Sergio Leone.

Paul McCartney Helps a 64-Year-Old Fan Make an Epic Marriage Proposal Onstage During His Concert

By Justin Page on Jul 09, 2014 10:16 am

Watch the Video

Sir Paul McCartney recently helped a 64-year-old fan make an epic marriage proposal onstage during his concert at the Times Union Center in Albany, New York. Paul first noticed the couple — John and Claudia of Rochester, New York — in the crowd holding up signs that read, “He won't marry me ’til he meets you” and “I have the ring and I’m 64.” He then called the lovebirds out and brought them on the stage to seal the deal.

John started his proposal off on the right foot by singing the 1967 song “When I’m Sixty-Four” by The Beatles and ended it with his lady love saying “yes.” Paul was so tickled by John’s singing that he and his band quickly jumped in to play along.

'Urban Giants', A Short Documentary About Two Art Deco Towers at the Center of New York City Telecommunications

By Brian Heater on Jul 09, 2014 09:56 am

Watch the Video

“Urban Giants” is a short documentary produced by communication company Telx that takes a close look at two large towers in lower Manhattan that have played a major role in American telecommunications since being built in the early 1930s. The Western Union Building on Hudson Street and the AT&T Long Distance Building on 6th Ave. — built in 1930 and 1932, respectively — are considered two of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture, constructed during a time in which they towered over their closest neighbors.

When these buildings were built, they were incredibly disruptive in the neighborhoods around them. They were surrounded by buildings that were four or five stories high. The telephone company referred to them as "Urban Giants." And that sense is really a part of what gave them their drama — a sense that they had come almost out of nowhere and ushered in a completely new era.
