The National Centre for Cell Science (NCCS) took birth as National Tissue Culture Facility in March 11, 1986 with a mandate of basic research, teaching & training, and as a national repository for cell lines/hybridomas etc. The centre is located in the midst of academically enriched environment of University of Pune campus, Pune.

Pharmacovigilance is particularly concerned with adverse drug reactions, or ADRs, which are officially described as: “A response to a drug which is noxious and unintended, and which occurs at doses normally used for the prophylaxis, diagnosis or therapy of disease, or for the modification of physiological function”. The mission of Pharmacovigilance is to contribute to the protection of public health in the regulation of the safety; quality and efficacy of medicines for human use and to ensure the healthcare professionals and patients have access to information about the safe and effective use of medicine. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines an adverse drug reaction (ADR) as “Any response to a drug which is noxious and unintended, and which occurs at doses normally used in man for prophylaxis, diagnosis or therapy of disease or for modification of the physiological function”.

The discipline of pharmacovigilance has developed considerably since the 1972 WHO technical report, and it remains a dynamic clinical and scientific discipline. It has been essential to meet the challenges of the increasing range and potency of medicines (including vaccines), which carry with them an inevitable and sometimes unpredictable potential for harm. The following is a summary of some of the serious challenges facing pharmacovigilance programmes in the next ten years & the major challenges are:Globalization, Web-based sales and information, Broader safety concerns, Public health versus pharmaceutical industry economic growth , Monitoring of established products, Developing and emerging countries, Attitudes and perceptions to benefit and harm, Outcomes and Impact.

ABSTRACT:
The scope and need of the present work is to develop and validate an analytical method for the analysis of an anti-diabetic drug. Literature survey reveals various UV, HPLC and LC/MS methods are available for individual estimation of the Metformin Hydrochloride and Sitagliptin Phosphate and in combination with other drugs. But, none of the reported analytical methods describe a stability indicating RP-HPLC method for the simultaneous analysis of Metformin and Sitagliptin in tablet dosage form. Hence the present works aims at developing a simple, sensitive, precise, economic and validated second order derivative UV spectroscopic method & stability indicating RP-HPLC method for the simultaneous estimation of Sitagliptin and Metformin in pharmaceutical dosage form. Incomparision with direct UV method, the second order derivative UV spectroscopic method eliminates the interference from UV-absorbing excipients. This method was found to be fast and can be used for formulation screening. HPLC is an integral analytical tool in assessing drug product stability.  HPLC methods should be able to separate, detect and quantify the various drug-related degradants that can form on storage or manufacturing, plus detect and quantify any drug-related impurities that may be introduced during synthesis. Stability studies were carried out under various stress conditions like acid hydrolysis, base hydrolysis, water hydrolysis, oxidation, photolytic degradation and under UV-light. Both the drugs Sitagliptin and metformin were degraded more in the alkaline condition.
