Fart Code, An App That Explains Nutritional Information for Food Based on Their ‘Fart Power’

Posted: 05 Jun 2014 10:02 AM PDT

Fart Code is an app by BETA Group of Goodby Silverstein & Partners that explains nutritional information for food based on their “fart power.” The app is designed to interest children in nutrition by appealing to their sense of humor. When the app scans a barcode for food, it uses an algorithm to determine how toxic a fart would be from those ingredients. Fart Code is currently available on iOS.

An algorithm uses those ingredients to determine the level of toxicity on a "fartometer" and produces the appropriate fart noise and vibration; a rough equivalent of how your digestive system would process the ingredients.

‘Fight or Flight or Whatever’, A Short Documentary About How People React When They’re Robbed at Gunpoint

Posted: 05 Jun 2014 09:56 AM PDT

"Fight or Flight or Whatever" is a short by filmmakers Andrew Norton and Chris Wardle about Toronto comedian Rob Norman, who was asleep in his bed when two robbers entered his home. The short explores the concept of "fight-or-flight," and how our initial reaction doesn't always fit comfortably into one of those two categories.

You're being robbed at gunpoint, but you also have to deal with the fact that you're not who you thought you were. You're not Bruce Willis in "Die Hard." You are weak, you are helpless and you were instantly submissive. That door came down and you gave up completely.

The story is retold through animations by artist Drew Shannon.

Legal Beverages, ‘Wake and Bake’ Cold Coffee Drinks Brewed With Cannabis Extract

Posted: 05 Jun 2014 09:29 AM PDT

Legal Beverages

Legal is a new line of cold coffee beverages brewed by Washington State food and drink company Mirth Provisions that takes advantage of the state's new Marijuana laws by incorporating 20 milligrams of locally-grown cannabis extract into the recipe. In an interview, creator Adam Stites refers to the line of flavored coffee drinks as "wake and bake beverages."

We want the experience to be more similar to that if you had a nice IPA or glass of wine. We don’t want to pack so much THC into every one of our drinks that it’s unpleasant, especially for people that are just getting into marijuana.

Pepper is a humanoid personal robot jointly developed by SoftBank Mobile and Aldebaran Robotics featuring emotion recognition and the capability of self-improvement and adaptation. According to their press release, this makes Pepper the world’s first combination of those qualities. Though Pepper is designed to live with humans, and that’s the eventual goal, he is currently greeting customers in SoftBank Mobile stores.

Pepper knows what state you are in, using his knowledge of universal emotions (joy, surprise, anger, doubt and sadness) and his ability to analyse your facial expression, your body language and the words you use. He will guess your mood, and will even adapt to it. For example, he will try to cheer you up by playing your favourite song!

7x6x2

“7x6x2″ is a short sci-fi film written and co-directed by Batman: Year 100 cartoonist Paul Pope for Tribeca Digital Studios about a robot repairman sent to a hostile planet. The film, which was shot in 2012 on an early version of the Sony F55 4K camera, is based on Pope’s unreleased graphic novella of the same name. The artist discussed the creation process in an interview with Tribeca.

We tried to look at the film as the last ten minutes of a science fiction movie you’ve never seen.

While this is his first directing gig, Pope has already been involved in a number of film projects, including the upcoming Battling Boy, based on his recent young adult graphic novel for First Second.

Roombots, A Series of Small Robotic Modules That Can Change Their Shape to Create Furniture

Posted: 05 Jun 2014 07:42 AM PDT

Roombots is a series of small robotic modules by the Biorobotics Laboratory (BIOROB) at Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) that can change their shape to create furniture. Each 22-centimeter-long module includes a wireless connection, a battery, three motors, and retractable claws that allow them to latch onto each other to form larger structures. The researchers behind Roombots also developed special surfaces featuring holes for their retractable claws that allow the modules to interact with other objects.

The Roombots project is a true technological challenge, and for the moment it includes four functional modules with an autonomy of one-hour – still not enough to create complete pieces of furniture, but enough to build simple structures and hybrid combinations.
