In the latest episode of SciShow, host Hank Green explores the world of electric animals. The category includes animals with electroreception, the ability to detect electric currents to get a better idea of their surroundings, and those with electrogenesis like the electric eel, which can produce their own electric current for hunting and self-defense.

Biologists believe that electrogenesis has evolved separately at least 11 separate times, in places as isolated from each other as the African interior, the Amazon basin and the coral basin in Australia.

‘Barkley 100′, A Short Documentary About an Unconventional 100-Mile Ultramarathon in Tennessee

Posted: 10 Jun 2014 09:16 AM PDT

“Barkley 100″ is a short documentary by Denver-based filmmaker Brendan Young that takes a look at the Barkley Marathons, a 100-mile ultramarathon in Tennessee that was inspired by a prison break. Founder Gary “Lazarus Lake” Cantrell got the idea for the race after watching a news report of a failed prison break by Martin Luther King Jr. assassin James Earl Ray.

When James Earl Ray Escaped, we were watching it on TV like everyone else. We were laughing at him only making eight and a half miles in 54 hours. I said, “in that length of time, I could have gone 100 miles.”

Fittingly, the notoriously difficult race has a number of unique features, including an uncertain starting time that occurs when Lake lights up a cigarette.

2006 Chevrolet Equinox Snows Inside When the Air Conditioner Is Turned Up All the Way

Posted: 10 Jun 2014 08:04 AM PDT

Boulder, Colorado resident Ben Kraus shot this video in his girlfriend’s 2006 Chevrolet Equinox, which emits white, frozen pieces of a snow-like substance when the air conditioner is turned up all the way. Reddit user coronado22 suggests that the unseasonable precipitation is due to a lack of refrigerant.

The snow is the result of the evaporator coil that acts as the heat exchanger to condition the air becoming too cold so the humidity is freezing and flaking off. The reason that the evaporator coil is becoming too cold is due to the fact that the system is low on refrigerant, most likely due to a leak in [the] system.

TIK, An Incredibly Slim Minimalist Keychain Made From a Bike Chain

Posted: 10 Jun 2014 07:41 AM PDT

TIK is a minimalist keychain by Budapest-based designer Daniel Farkas that utilizes the joints of a bike chain for an incredibly slim footprint that weighs 40% less than standard key rings. According to Farkas, the design is also extra rugged and provides additional leverage, making the keychain a single unit when using it in a keyhole. The idea for the product, which is currently raising funds via a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, came to Farkas during a biking trip up the Hekla volcano in Iceland.

There was a super steep ascent and I hoped my muddy chains won't surrender under the load. Of course they worked like charm and then I suddenly came to the realization: the chain has that one-dimensional flexibility that I needed and the rollers in my 10-speed chain seemed to be just as thick as a regular key.

It’s Okay to Be Smart Attempts to Explain the Existence of Time

Posted: 10 Jun 2014 07:09 AM PDT

In the latest installment of It's Okay to Be Smart, host Joe Hanson attempts to explain the existence of time. The answer may have something to do with entropy, which is to say that everything around us seems to be getting more chaotic. This notion also happens to be in line with British astronomer Arthur Eddington‘s concept of the arrow of time.

Why know that today is different than yesterday, but why? Physicists sway the universe tends toward disorder. A great arrow of time points toward a future in which entropy is greater than it was in the past. Probably.

Taxi, a loyal service dog in San Antonio, Texas, took his place in the 7th grade school yearbook right next to Rachel Benke, the young girl with epilepsy who had been in Taxi’s charge for the past four years.

He goes everywhere with the soon-to-be eight-grader, including accepting awards at school, celebrating birthdays, and even on the school track where he one day sprung into action. “Her aide was holding Taxi on the side and he just started pulling away from the aide as hard as he could trying to get to Rachel,” [Theresa] Benke said. She said once they got her inside, Rachel had a grand mal seizure, and Taxi wouldn’t leave the girl’s side. “I don’t know how Taxi new this, but he wouldn’t let anyone near her until the paramedics arrived,”- KHOU 11.
