Spiders Tune and Pluck Webs Like a Musical Instrument to Locate Their Prey

Posted: 11 Jun 2014 07:57 AM PDT

According to Oxford University's Silk Group research team, spiders are able to to fine tune their webs, in order to locate where prey have landed. The arachnids have sensors on their legs capable of detecting specific vibrations that help them pinpoint the spot where an insect is struggling to free itself.

The spider “reads” these vibrations to, for example, locate where a struggling insect has been snagged. And apparently the web has to be tuned just right to provide that kind of arachnidian triangulation.

The spiders spend time fine tuning the different strands for easier detection and will even pluck them, in order to locate prey once it has stopped moving.

In "Above LA," Los Angeles filmmaker Chris Pritchard compiles some lovely time-lapse video of Los Angeles shot from hills and rooftops to give a view of the city we don't always see.

Above LA is a love letter to Los Angeles and showcases my favorite way to view the city – from above. Whether on a rooftop, a hill, or a mountain, getting above the grind of the city allows you to appreciate it in a new way. Once you get even slightly above, the views and sounds begin to change dramatically.

In this short mockumentary, Harris Alterman of DoortoDoor Comedy plays Connor Redwood, a musician who found his calling yelling "Hey!" in songs. In the short, Redwood shows off his abilities on tracks by The Lumineers, Of Monsters and Men, Edward Sharpe and Magnetic Zeros and Henri Rabalais and relates an origin story not entirely unlike that of Hank Kingley's "Hey now!" on The Larry Sanders Show.

I've been yelling "hey!" as long as I can remember. When I was a kid, I'd yell, "hey! what's that?" an "hey! let's get some ice cream." It just kind of became my passion.
